Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, arrived in Moscow on Thursday at the head of a diplomatic delegation for high-level talks with Russian officials and to deliver a significant message to President Vladimir Putin.
The primary purpose of the visit, as confirmed by Araghchi himself before departing Tehran, is to convey a written message from Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, directly to President Putin during an anticipated meeting.
Beyond the delivery of the message, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmail Baghaei stated that Araghchi’s agenda includes discussions with senior Russian officials. These talks are set to cover the full spectrum of bilateral relations, pressing regional and international developments, and crucially, the recent round of the talks between Iran and the United States.
The timing of the visit is particularly noteworthy, coming just days before the scheduled second round of Iran-US talks, set to take place in Rome, Italy, on Saturday with Omani mediation. Araghchi’s consultations in Moscow underscore the close coordination between Tehran and Moscow on shared foreign policy issues.
This marks Araghchi’s second official visit to Russia since assuming the role of Foreign Minister. He previously traveled to Russia in late 2024, accompanying the Iranian President to the BRICS summit in Kazan and the signing of a comprehensive strategic treaty between the two nations in Moscow, further cementing their strategic alignment.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov visited Tehran on February 25, 2025, during which he held talks with Araghchi and met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
