Iran and Saudi Arabia are set to station their new envoys in the respective capitals in the coming days, according to a source who spoke to Iran Nuances.

The source said that Alireza Enayati, Iran’s new ambassador to Saudi Arabia, will depart for Riyadh on Tuesday, September 5, to officially begin his duties.

Enayati met with Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian on Saturday, September 2, to discuss the future plans for Tehran-Riyadh relations before his departure.

The source, who requested anonymity, told Iran Nuances that Abdullah bin Saud al-Anzi, the new Saudi ambassador to Iran, will arrive in Tehran “almost simultaneously” and within the next few days.

Enayati is the first Iranian ambassador to take up this role after the severance of Tehran-Riyadh relations in 2016 and after the restoration of diplomatic ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia in 2023. His main tasks include transforming the recent understanding into more improved relations, activating past agreements in Iran-Saudi relations, arranging new agreements in political, economic, and security fields, and facilitating mutual comprehension between Tehran and Riyadh in bilateral, multilateral, and regional relations.

Enayati has previous experience as the former Iranian ambassador to Kuwait. Before being appointed as Iran’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, he was the Director General of the Persian Gulf Department of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
