GENEVA – The Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, arrived in Geneva on Sunday night to participate in the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council and the UN Conference on Disarmament.

Amirabdollahian is expected to deliver speeches at both events, highlighting Iran’s views and positions on various regional and international issues, especially the human rights situation in Palestine. He is also set to meet foreign officials and counterparts on the sidelines of the summits.

On the sidelines of the session, Iranian FM will also attend a joint meeting with a number of Muslim and Arab foreign ministers, to discuss the latest developments in Palestine and the Israeli bombardments of the Gaza strip.

The UN Human Rights Council and the UN Conference on Disarmament are two of the main multilateral forums that deal with human rights and disarmament issues, respectively. The 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council will run from February 26 to April 5.

Amirabdollahian’s visit to Geneva comes against the backdrop of a devastating war in Gaza, where more than 30,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli airstrikes and shelling.

Several political officials including Iranian foreign minister as well as human rights experts and civil society organizations have urged the council to take urgent action to protect the rights of the Palestinian people and hold Israel accountable for its crimes.
