Iran signed a memorandum of understanding with Russia’s state-run atomic energy corporation, Rosatom, to develop and construct small-scale nuclear power plants (SMRs) on Iranian soil.
The agreement marks another step in deepening strategic cooperation between Tehran and Moscow, demonstrating a unified front against Western sanctions.
The deal was finalized in Moscow during a meeting between Mohammad Eslami, Vice President of Iran and Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), and Alexei Likhachev, the Director General of Rosatom.
As a next step to implement this agreement, relevant organizations from both countries will draft and sign specific contracts for the design and construction of power plants utilizing small modular reactors (SMRs).
These reactors are crucial for advancing Iran’s technical expertise, nuclear technology, and domestic industries that manufacture power plant equipment. Moreover, mastering SMR technology will create new opportunities to power major industrial centers and improve the stability of the national electricity grid.
