Iran has carried out the execution of three men, convicted of perpetrating an “act of terror” that resulted in the death of three security forces during a bout of unrest in the central city of Isfahan in 2022.

The news website affiliated with Iranian Judiciary, Mizan Online, reported that the death sentences for Majid Kazemi, Saleh Mirhashemi, and Saeed Yaghoubi were carried out on Friday morning.

According to authorities, the convicted individuals “opened fire indiscriminately on both civilians and security forces” in an Isfahan neighborhood, which had been engulf in protests in October 2022. As a consequence of the attack, “three security force members were killed, and several others, including civilians, were injured”.

In addition to the executed trio, three other individuals were tried for their involvement in the same wave of violence. While one of them was acquitted of the charges, the remaining two received prison sentences.

In September 2022, Iran experienced a surge in unrest, fueled by public outrage and demonstrations over the death of a young Iranian woman in custody. The disturbances persisted intermittently for several months before eventually subsiding.

Throughout the upheaval, Iranian security officials arrested and tried thousands of individuals, although the majority of detainees were subsequently released under a clemency order issued by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

Moreover, Iran’s intelligence agencies said they uncovered evidence of foreign involvement in the lethal incidents that unfolded across the nation last year.
